Oracle Sues Google, Kills OpenSolaris
It was a Friday the 13th double-whammy. First, Oracle came out and said they were suing Google, and then word leaked that OpenSolaris is dead as a Sun project.
Oracle is suing Google for infringements on patents relating to Google's Android operating system. Apparently, there are some bits in Google's implementation which use Oracle's patents. Google's implementation doesn't meet the requirements for indemnification, or so we'll find out.
An Oracle internal memo was leaked out indicating that in the future, Solaris development will be internal, and the community and development versions will trail the main version. The license is still permissive enough to build one's own distro, but everyone downstream is at Oracle's mercy. The Illumos project, which only recently started, has decided to fork the source.
